Cons of a Dress Code

Public schools are beginning to adopt dress codes such as uniforms. Many issues are being caused because of this parents paying for uniforms will practically will be paying for public school which is free. Another issue with strict dress code policies and uniforms is it is hindering a student's life in society. Due to parents having to pay for separate clothing that their child cannot wear outside of school, it won't prepare them for how to dress in society.
Costly uniforms
According to the U.S. Department of Education, annual school uniform sales average around 1,300,000,00 dollars (Statistic Brain). Uniforms for children or middle schoolers tend to not last long because they are consistently growing. After researching various sites, for preschool to about second or third grade girl students, uniforms per year are priced around 156 dollars and boy students uniforms are priced around 140 dollars (Class Uniforms). If a child grows throughout the year, they will need to buy new uniforms, therefore, the parents have to spend over a hundred dollars again. When a public school requires a uniform, it may affect poor families because they may rely on hand-me-downs and low priced clothing for their child. Adding a uniform to a free public school creates a burden and draws students and families away. Thus, also taking away the diversity of the school.
            Hindering students life in society

Scott Ket, Ph. D, a faculty member of the Fresno Pacific University School of Education “opposes school dress codes because they teach students that conformity is more important that adaptability and do not prepare young people for the workplace and its emphasis on flexibility and problem-solving” (Fresno.edu). He discusses that principals see dress codes and uniforms as a way to protect the learning environment and make a point of saying, “if students feel safe, they will learn more. Yet, perhaps the more important question may be: What are students learning?” (Fresno.edu). By having a school uniform, students are unable to adapt in society. They will be unable to adapt in society because they were taught to conform.
